Social Emotional Learning (SEL)
at Seattle Public Schools

Social Emotional Learning (SEL) involves developing awareness and skills to manage emotions, establish relationships, set goals, and make responsible decisions, all of which contribute to success in education and life. At Seattle Public Schools, SEL is a cornerstone of education, fostering emotional intelligence, relationship-building, and responsible decision-making. When we consider educating the whole child, their social and emotional development must be part of overall instruction.

Understanding Social Emotional Learning

In a world where academic success is just one piece of the puzzle, Seattle Public Schools (SPS) is committed to nurturing well-rounded individuals. Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is a vital component of our educational approach, aiming to equip students with essential life skills that extend far beyond the classroom. Research tells us that social-emotional skills are critical to both academic learning and the competencies our children will need to be successful in their careers and personal lives. Children’s social-emotional development is best supported when parents and families, schools, and community partners work together.

What is Social-Emotional Learning

At SPS, SEL is about teaching students the skills they need to thrive academically, emotionally, and socially. It encompasses self-awareness, self-regulation, empathy, responsible decision-making, and effective interpersonal skills. SEL helps students manage stress, build resilience, and foster a positive sense of self. It's not about promoting any particular viewpoint or agenda; it's about providing practical tools that benefit students now and in the future.

What Social-Emotional Learning is Not...

SEL is not about indoctrination or imposing beliefs. It's not a replacement for academic learning; rather, it complements academic success by preparing students for life's challenges. SEL is not divisive; it's unifying, emphasizing shared values like empathy, respect, and effective communication. It's not about telling students what to think; it's about growing resilience.

Integrating SEL into Education

Our SEL curriculum is thoughtfully integrated into classroom activities, school programs, and student interactions. We prioritize emotional intelligence, resilience, and responsible decision-making. Programs like Second Step and "RULER" equip students with skills to understand and manage their emotions effectively. SEL is not a standalone topic; it's seamlessly woven into the fabric of education, preparing students for success in school and life.

Collaboration and Empowerment

Collaboration is key to our SEL efforts. We partner with experts and organizations to enhance our programs. We empower educators with professional development to seamlessly integrate SEL into classrooms. Parents and families are involved through workshops and resources that support SEL at home. Social-emotional Learning starts at home and continues at school and in the community.

Embracing SEL for a Brighter Future

Our inclusion of SEL is rooted in our dedication to student's holistic development. It's not about following a trend; it's about preparing students for lifelong success. SEL equips students with skills to navigate an ever-changing world, make responsible decisions, and build meaningful relationships. This is not a political agenda but an educational imperative transcending politics and ideology.
